How to stop dentures from slipping?

May 24, 20262 min read

How do you stop dentures from slipping and sliding around your mouth?

Your jawbone has shrunk too much for dentures to grip properly anymore. Up to 40% of denture wearers experience slipping issues daily, making eating and speaking a constant struggle.

Dentures rely on suction and bone ridges for stability. As your jawbone shrinks from tooth loss, those ridges flatten out. Your dentures have less to grab onto, so they slide around. Lower dentures are worst because there's less surface area and your tongue constantly moves them.

Denture adhesives help temporarily. Creams, powders, and strips can improve grip for a few hours. But they're messy, taste awful, and need constant reapplication. Plus, using too much adhesive can actually make slipping worse by creating a slippery layer.

Relining helps sometimes. Your dentist can add material to make dentures fit tighter against your gums. But this is temporary since bone loss continues. You'll need frequent adjustments and eventual replacement.

The real solution is implant-supported dentures. Just 2-4 implants can anchor your dentures securely. They snap or screw onto the implants, eliminating all movement. You can eat steak, laugh confidently, and speak clearly without worry.

Implant dentures cost more upfront but save money long-term. No more adhesives, adjustments, or replacements every few years. In Auckland, implant-supported dentures range from $15,000-$25,000 for a full arch.

Some Auckland patients choose individual implants instead. Replacing all teeth with separate implants gives you the closest thing to natural teeth. You brush and floss normally, eat anything, and never worry about slipping.

Don't suffer with loose dentures. Auckland has excellent implant specialists who can give you stable, confident eating and speaking again.

Related Questions:

  • How often should dentures be replaced? Traditional dentures need replacement every 5-7 years as your jaw continues changing shape.

  • Are denture adhesives safe to use daily? Generally yes, but overuse can irritate gums and mask proper fit problems.

  • Can mini implants help with loose dentures? Yes, mini implants are a less invasive option for stabilizing dentures, especially for lower arches.
