Options like plates or dentures for missing teeth in NZ?
What are the main options like plates or dentures for replacing missing teeth in New Zealand?
The three most common are full dentures, partial dentures (plates), and dental bridges. Each one sits above the gumline and replaces the visible tooth, but none of them replace the root underneath.
That distinction matters more than most people realise.
Full dentures replace an entire arch of missing teeth. They sit on your gums and rely on suction and the shape of your jaw to stay put. They're the most affordable option upfront, $2,000-$5,000 in Auckland, but they restore only about 20-25% of your natural chewing force. And as your jawbone continues to shrink without roots to stimulate it, they'll need relining and eventually replacement.
Partial dentures, often called plates, clip onto remaining teeth to fill gaps. They're removable, cheaper than bridges, and work reasonably well for smaller gaps. The downsides are comfort and confidence. They can click when you talk, trap food underneath, and feel bulky.
Bridges fill a gap by anchoring a false tooth to the teeth on either side. They look natural and don't need to be removed. The trade-off is that the neighbouring teeth get ground down permanently to act as anchors, even if they're perfectly healthy.
All three options leave the jawbone unstimulated. Bone loss continues quietly underneath, changing your face shape over time.
Dental implants are the only replacement that addresses both the tooth and the root. But if cost or timing is a barrier, plates, dentures, and bridges are legitimate short-term options worth understanding properly before you decide.
